Groups supporting and opposing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi assembled outside the United Nations Wednesday as Modi joined a multinational crowd for a yoga session.
Modi kicked off the public portion of his U.S. visit Wednesday at an event honoring the International Day of Yoga. Modi persuaded the U.N. in 2014 to designate the day as an annual observance.
The pro-Modi group cried out greetings to him and held signs with welcoming messages. Modi opponents waved large yellow flags referring to Khalistan, the name of the homeland that Sikh separatists seek to create in India.
Wednesday's yoga-themed U.N. visit is a savvy and symbolic choice for a premier who's made the ancient discipline a personal practice and a diplomatic tool.
Modi plans to head to Washington later Wednesday for a three-day visit including an Oval Office meeting with President Joe Biden.
