Avtar Singh Khanda, the mastermind behind the attack on the Indian High Commission office in London and the political mentor of Waris Punjab De leader Amritpal Singh, died under mysterious circumstances in Birmingham. The official explanation is that he was undergoing treatment for leukemia for more than two weeks. But there are strong reports that Khanda died of poisoning.

Avatar Singh Khanda. Leader of the separatist organization Khalistan Liberation Front. Mastermind of the March 19 attack on the London High Commission office. The National Investigation Agency had issued a search notice against 25 people including him. The news of Khanda’s death came within ten hours of the identification notice. The official version is that Avatar Khanda, who was admitted to Sandwell Hospital in West Birmingham two weeks ago, died this morning.

But the media reports that Khanda died of poisoning. Indian agencies are also collecting information on mysterious deaths. While the search was on for Waris Punjab De leader Amritpal Singh, the Punjab Police had detained Avatar Khanda’s mother and sister. Khanda’s father, who was a member of the same organization, was killed in an encounter by Indian security agencies in 1991.
