After becoming the first Indian shuttler to win a gold in the World Championships, PV Sindhu has responded to her detractors in the best way possible. While many had been criticizing Sindhu for losing a number of tournament finals, the newly crowned World Champion shut them out by beating her nemesis Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7 in the World Championships final on Sunday.

In the six appearances that World No. 5 Sindhu has made at the BWF World Championships, she has won 2 silver, 2 bronze and 1 gold medal to become the joint-most successful women's singles shuttler at the world meet.

In an exclusive interview with India Today, when Sindhu was asked whether questions on her losing consecutive finals had a bearing on her performances, the ace shuttler said that she has answered such questions with the latest victory and her 'racquet'.

"Yeah, I think I answered it with my racquet and victory. Coming to the finals is one thing. But you win some, you lose some. Losing and winning is a part of life. I came back much stronger and believed in myself which I think is more important," said Sindhu.

Sindhu had lost to Okuhara in the 2017 finals but she claimed that she didn't put any extra pressure on herself when she met her old foe on Sunday.

"2019 (meeting between her and Okuhara) for me was just like other matches and I didn't take any extra pressure and gave my 100%. The past results didn't even come to my mind. I just thought: 'Okay Sindhu it doesn't matter. Losing or winning is secondary.' I was very focussed. I was prepared for each point," said Sindhu.

Sindhu arrived in India on Tuesday morning, along with coach Pullela Gopichand, and received a warm reception at the airport on her return to the country as the Rio Olympic silver medallist promised to work harder and clinch many more medals.

After arriving, Sindhu met Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and later also had an interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After meeting Sindhu, PM Modi tweeted, "India’s pride, a champion who has brought home a Gold and lots of glory!"
