Indian police confirmed three people died overnight after a shell fired by Pakistani soldiers hit their home in Poonch region.
The area resides close to the so-called Line of Control dividing the Himalayan territory of Kashmir between the two nuclear-armed rivals. The Indian army purports to have responded with soldiers, according to reports.
The area has been dogged by conflict in recent days after Indian airstrikes targeted alleged Pakistani militant bases on Monday.
Pakistan retaliated in kind by downing an Indian fighter jet and holding its pilot captive before releasing him on Friday in a “peace gesture”.
Tensions in the region have been on a knife edge after an Indian aircraft crossed into Pakistan.
