Why are Indians significantly wealthier than their South Asian counterparts, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, in the United Kingdom? Indians are among the top earners, second only to Jews in terms of household income, while Pakistanis and Bangladeshis rank near the bottom. A key difference between these groups is their religious and cultural backgrounds—Indians are predominantly Hindus and Sikhs, while Pakistanis and Bangladeshis are mostly Muslims. While religion and culture have certainly influenced these income disparities, the migration patterns of these communities to the UK play an even more crucial role. In essence, many Pakistani and Bangladeshi migrants arrived in the UK from poorer, less educated backgrounds, while a significant number of Indian migrants came from middle-class or wealthy families.
