'I washed my hair in my own urine and it was better than shampoo'
Iam not in the habit of taking beauty tips from nomads living in the Bulgarian mountains. But there was something about Miriam Lancewood that captivated me. She appeared on Channel Five series New Lives in The Wild, with her husband Peter - the couple survive on a mere £3,000 a year - where she was seen washing her soft, caramel-coloured locks in her own urine.
The presenter, my friend Ben Fogle, laughed as he too crouched over the babbling brook in Bulgaria, a cup of his own pee in his hand, observing, "It's still warm", as he gamely poured it over his head.
