New Delhi | Jagran Entertainment Desk: This Friday witnessed a head-to-head competition between two films, Ajay Devgn-starrer Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior and Deepika Padukone’s much-awaited Chhapaak. Day one is over and the box office collections for the first day are out of both the films.
Talking about Chhapaak, according to BoxOfficeIndia report, Deepika’s film has earned Rs 4.75 crore on day 1. The report said that the morning collections of the film were decent and trade experts expected an increase in the evening but the film did not pick up the pace.
The report also added that Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji The Unsung Warrior surpassed Chhapaak with its box office collections, earnings Rs 15 crore on the first day of the release. State-wise, Tanhaji performed very well in Maharashtra while it was decent in North and East India and Nizam and Andhra Pradesh collections were also good, it added.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh also confirms the first-day earnings of Tanhaji and wrote in a tweet, “#Tanhaji exceeds expectations and posts healthy total on Day 1... Biz grew rapidly from post-noon onwards... Excellent in #Maharashtra [#Mumbai, parts of #CP and #Nizam circuits]... Glowing word of mouth should ensure solid growth on Day 2 and 3... Fri ₹ 15.10 cr. #India biz”.
Both Tanhaji and Chhapaak are different in genres and the scale. Trade experts had earlier predicted that Chhapaak will earn around 5-7 crores on day 1, while Tanhaji can cross 10 crore mark on the day, so it does. Tanhaji is a commercial entertainer which is much bigger in budget and star cast whereas Chhapaak is a realistic social drama.
Tanhaji released with around 3500 plus screens, while Chhapaak has around 1500-2000 screens. But it’s a non-holiday release and looking at the disturbed environment in the country right now, they are good numbers at the end of the day
Helmed by Meghna Gulzar, Chhapaak is the story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal (played by Deepika) highlighting her struggles to live a normal life.
Directed by Om Raut, Tanhaji The Unsung Warrior brings Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan and Kajol together after a long time. The film is a period saga that traces the story of Tanhaji Malusare (Ajay), a subedar in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s army.
