Deepika Padukone’s latest cinematic offering, Chhapaak, has turned out to be a damp squib at the box office. The film, on Thursday, collected a miniscule Rs 1.85 crore as it faced a significant drop in its business. After a week-long run in cinemas, its total collection stands at an underwhelming Rs 28.38 crore.
Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh, in a tweet on Friday, said that the film had “lacklusture” trending in its first week and that the Week 2 was going to be tough for it. His post read, “#Chhapaak disappoints... Lacklustre trending in Week 1... Partial holidays [Tue and Wed] helped marginally... Will find the going tough in Week 2... Fri 4.77 cr, Sat 6.90 cr, Sun 7.35 cr, Mon 2.35 cr, Tue 2.55 cr, Wed 2.61 cr, Thu 1.85 cr. Total: ₹ 28.38 cr. #India biz.”
Chhapaak, which is based on the real-life story of acid-attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, is directed by Meghna Gulzar of Raazi and Talvar fame. Featuring Vikrant Massey as the male lead opposite Deepika, the film has Madhurjeet Sarghi, Anand Tiwari, Vaibhavi Upadhyaya, Payal Nair and Vishal Dahiya playing supporting roles.
Chhapaak, upon its release on January 10 received mixed to positive reviews from film critics. ZoomTVEntertainment.com gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and noted, “The film has its heart and intentions in the right place, and that’s one of the main reasons Chhapaak should be celebrated for.”
At the box office, Chhapaak faced a tough fight from Ajay Devgn’s high-budget period actioner Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. The latter is going super strong at the ticket windows having collected over Rs 118 crore in its first week.
Chhapaak is Deepika’s first box-office flop in the last many years. She will be seen next in Kabir Khan’s 83. The film, headlined by her husband and actor Ranveer Singh, is based on India’s victory at the 1983 Cricket World Cup.
