1727: Crushing Christian Fanboys!
#Christianity #Christians #witchcraft
Leviticus 20:27 “’A man or woman who is a medium or spiritist among you must be put to death. You are to stone them; their blood will be on their own heads.’”
Exodus 22:18 "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live"
Approximately 35,000 to 60,000 people were executed during the European and early American witch hunts between the 15th and 18th centuries.
The vast majority of these trials and executions occurred between 1450 and 1750, with a sharp peak from 1550 to 1650
• Germany: Suffered the highest intensity, accounting for roughly 25,000 executions (nearly 40% of all European trials).
• Scotland: Executed around 2,500 people.
Hanging: The standard legal punishment in England and its colonial territories, including the American colonies. Witches were never burned at the stake in the American colonies.
The Literal Texts: Sorcerers vs. Witches
The word witch is a European construct. The Vedas—most notably the Atharva Veda —do not talk about hunting old women in villages. Instead, they focus heavily on magical warfare, cosmic balance, and exorcism. The Atharva Veda contains numerous hymns dedicated to abhicara (counter-magic or defensive sorcery).
It features specific spells to ward off, neutralize, or destroy malevolent, invisible entities, malevolent spirits, and black magicians (Yatudhanas or Kimidins ).
Divine Retribution, Not Human Execution
When the Vedas speak of destroying or crushing these forces, it is almost entirely framed as divine intervention or metaphysical rebounding , not a mandate for human mobs to execute people. [9, 10]
For example, Rig Veda 1.133 calls upon the deity Indra to crush the heads of the sorceresses and cast them into a deep pit.
The Atharva Veda includes mantras meant to act like a mirror: if someone sends a malevolent curse or black magic to your house, the mantra prays that the magic rebounds onto the sender.
The Modern Disconnect
Tragically, illegal witch-hunting (Daayan pratha ) still occurs in some impoverished or tribal areas of rural India. However, anthropologists, historians, and legal authorities note that these horrific acts are driven by socio-economic factors (such as property disputes, land-grabbing, and targeting marginalized widows) and local superstition—not by Vedic doctrine . Mainstream Hindu scripture emphasizes Ahimsā (non-injury) as a core spiritual virtue.
Atharva Veda itself acts as a manual for both defensive and offensive magic (abhicara ), the text views these practices as highly dangerous tools rather than a moral sin against God that demands a human-led death penalty.
While the Bible famously contains explicit, human-enforced legal mandates—most notably Exodus 22:18 ("Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live") —the Vedic tradition treats magic and sorcery through a fundamentally different lens.
Magic as a Practical/Karmic Science
In the Vedic worldview, mantras, herbs, and rituals are seen as laws of nature. Using black magic (yātu or abhicara ) is viewed less like dealing with the Devil and more like using a toxic or weaponized science.
