Betty Heimann - 1888 - 1961
Betty Heimann (* March 29 1888 in Wandsbek , † May 19 1961 Sirmione , Italy ) was a German Indologist .
Betty Heimann grew up as the fourth child of a Jewish banker on in Wandsbek. After high school she studied in Kiel (including with Paul Deussen ), Heidelberg , Göttingen and Bonn Classical Philology and Sanskrit .
In 1919, she was with a dissertation on an Upanisad comment Madhva with Professor victory at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel for Doctor of Philosophy PhD . Four years later, in 1923, habilitation them at Eugen Hultzsch at the University of Halle and was there until 1931 as a lecturer working.
Betty Heimann was less interested in the Indian philology philosophy whose peculiarities she understood as the result of the special geographical and climatic conditions of India. Logically she received in April 1926 a special lectureship in Indian philosophy at the University of Halle. For their research "studies the nature of Indian thought" they received in 1930 by the International Akademikerinnenbund the prize for the best scientific work of a woman.
As a teacher, Betty Heimann was extremely popular with their students because they knew how the knowledge in their lectures and seminars to convey very lively and vivid.
From the summer of 1931 was Betty Heimann associate professor at the University of Hamburg . Prior to 1933 it was exposed as a Jew there hostility of their peers. When her professor in the fall of 1933 - as a result of anti-Jewish laws (in this Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service ) - has been withdrawn, she was just on a by a U.S. - scholarship enabled research trip through India . They did not return to Germany but emigrated to the United Kingdom , where she was very welcome and immediately at the University of London and later at the University of Oxford began to teach Indian philosophy.
From 1945-1949 she was a professor at the University of Colombo in Ceylon .
In 1957 she was - appointed by the University of Halle as Full Professor - retroactively from 1935.
Died in 1961 Betty Heimann in Sirmione on Lake Garda .
On the Weinberg Campus of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg today a street is named after her.
