But India?...English Christian Tribalism: Exposing Montgomery Toms
#English #India
#Christian King Ecgberht of Wessex 802 to 839 fought all of them—Christians, pagans, and fellow Saxons. His reign exemplifies the tribal and political nature of early medieval warfare, where geography, dynasty, and power mattered far more than shared language or religion.
Beyond fighting the Christian Anglo-Saxons of Mercia, Ecgberht spent decades aggressively campaigning against the Christian Britons (Celts) of the southwest.
Christian kings routinely slaughtered other Christian kings to expand their borders, just as pagan rulers fought one another.
The Battle of Ellendun (825): Ecgberht crushed King Beornwulf of Mercia.
The Overthrow of Mercia (829) He directly invaded Mercia, drove out its Christian king, Wiglaf, and briefly ruled it himself before Wiglaf launched a resurgence and reclaimed the throne a year later.
Battle of Hatfield Chase (633):
The Christian King Cadwallon of Gwynedd (a Welsh kingdom) allied with the pagan King Penda of Mercia.
They fought against the Christian King Edwin of Northumbria.
Cadwallon sought revenge against Edwin for prior territorial invasions and defeats, while Penda wanted to check Northumbrian expansion and Christian influence. Religion took a backseat to survival, power, and regional hegemony.
Battle of the Winwaed (655):
The pagan King Penda of Mercia led an army that included Christian or nominally aligned British/Welsh auxiliary forces (such as King Cadafael of Gwynedd)
Loyalty to Kin and King, Not a Nation:
People did not view themselves as "English." Your identity and protection came entirely from your tribe—whether you were a West Saxon (Wessex), a Mercian, a Northumbrian, or a Jute. If you crossed a border into a rival kingdom, you were legally considered a foreigner and a potential enemy.
Deep Indigenous Roots: The foundations of South Asian culture go back more than 5,000 years to the Indus Valley Civilization and older Neolithic settlements like Mehrgarh.

How Did It Affect India? (The Cost)
Exploited Labor: The plantations relied on a system of indentured labor that historians often describe as "penal contract labor" or a modified form of slavery. Millions of impoverished locals and migrants (often called coolies) were lured from places like Bihar and Bengal with false promises, only to face disease, starvation wages, lashings, and being legally forbidden from leaving the plantations.
Land Dispossession: The British Raj passed laws like the Assam Wasteland Rules, which allowed the colonial government to seize vast tracts of ancestral land from indigenous communities (like the Singpho and Muttack peoples) and hand it over to British tea planters for next to nothing.
Famine and Economic Drain: Land that previously grew food crops for local populations was cleared for tea export. The profits did not reinvest into Indian infrastructure, healthcare, or education; they were drained back to Britain.
