Birmingham restaurant closure demand after illegal workers found in kitchen
A restaurant in Kingstanding has been found to be employing illegal workers, one who arrived on a small boat and the other who came into the country by hiding in a lorry.
Neither had the right to work in the UK. Both were later arrested.
The two men were questioned on their roles, with one confirming they were paid £10 to £20 a shift.
Both had come from India, one as long ago as 2007 in a lorry – and he had never applied to formally stay in the country – but had seemingly been allowed to do so.
He claimed to have been working at the restaurant for only a week – since the previous Sunday (April 6).
The Home Office report said Goyal Supermarket Ltd has two directors Gunasingham Rasitharan and Sakila Sinnaiah.
Companies House lists the directors as Rasitharan Gunasinkam (one letter different), who is said to be Sri Lankan and Sakila Sinnaiah who is British.
He was understood to be 53 and spoke Tamil and was interviewed using an interpreter.
First illegal worker 'paid in food'
The ICE team interviewed the first man who was cooking food and wearing chef whites.
He said he had been working at the restaurant for three months as a kitchen assistant ‘cutting food and making rolls’.
He said he works four days a week, around five hours a day., sometimes longer.
Boopathi’s, 84 Bandywood Rd, Kingstanding, Birmingham B44 9LT.
