Bhagavad Gita ~ Vital Verses


Form / Formless / Oneness / Multiple:

“O son of Prtha, know that I am the original seed of all existences, the intelligence of the intelligent, and the prowess of all powerful men.”
Chapter 7 Verse 10

“And whoever, at the time of death, quits his body, remembering Me alone, at once attains My nature. Of this there is no doubt.”

“My dear Arjuna, O winner of wealth, if you cannot fix your mind upon Me without deviation, then follow the regulated principles of bhakti-yoga In this way you will develop a desire to attain to Me.”

Emotions:

“O son of Kunti, the nonpermanent appearance of happiness and distress, and their disappearance in due course, are like the appearance and disappearance of winter and summer seasons. They arise from sense perception, O scion of Bharata, and one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed.”

“As a strong wind sweeps away a boat on the water, even one of the roaming senses on which the mind focuses can carry away a man's intelligence.”

“One who restrains the senses of action but whose mind dwells on sense objects certainly deludes himself and is called a pretender.”

“For him who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends; but for one who has failed to do so, his mind will remain the greatest enemy.”

“The manifestation of the mode of goodness can be experienced when all the gates of the body are illuminated by knowledge.”

“There are three gates leading to this hell - lust, anger and greed. Every sane man should give these up, for they lead to the degradation of the soul.” Chapter 16 Verse 21

Charity:

“Acts of sacrifice, charity and penance are not to be given up; they must be performed. Indeed, sacrifice, Charity and penance purify even the great souls.”
Chapter 18 Verse 15

“Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give away, And whatever austerities you perform – do that, O son of Kuntī, as an offering to Me.”
Chapter 9 Verse 27

“One who is not envious but is a kind friend to all living entities, who does not think himself a proprietor and is free from false ego, who is equal in both happiness and distress, who is tolerant, always satisfied, self-controlled, and engaged in devotional service with determination, his mind and intelligence fixed on Me – such a devotee of Mine is very dear to Me.” Chapter 12 Verse 13-14

“Charity given out of duty, without expectation of return, at the proper time and place, and to a worthy person is considered to be in the mode of goodness.”

Significance of Cows:

“Of weapons I am the thunderbolt; among cows I am the surabhi. Of causes for procreation I am Kandarpa, the god of love, and of serpents I am Vāsuki.”

Omnipresent / Every-being:

“For one who sees Me everywhere and sees everything in Me, I am never lost, nor is he ever lost to Me.”
- Chapter 6 Verse 30

“I envy no one, nor am I partial to anyone. I am equal to all. But whoever renders service unto Me in devotion is a friend, is in Me, and I am also a friend to him.”
Chapter 9 Verse 29

“Know that all opulent, Beautiful and glorious creations Spring from a spark of My splendour.”

“The Supreme Lord is situated in everyone's heart, O Arjuna, and is directing the wanderings of all living entities, who are seated as on a machine, made of the material energy.”

Duty:

“Prescribed duties should never be renounced. If one gives up his prescribed duties because of illusion, such renunciation is said to be in the mode of ignorance.”
Chapter 18 Verse 7


“One who neither hates nor desires the fruits of his activities is known to be always renounced. Such a person, free from all dualities, easily overcomes material bondage and is completely liberated, O mighty-armed Arjuna.”
