"British women are the biggest female binge drinkers in the world"
26% of women in the UK reported binge drinking (having at least six drinks in a single session)
We’ve all heard the phrase: ‘Britain has a drinking problem’. When we’re not drinking, we’re usually thinking about drinking, and when we’re not thinking about drinking or organising Thirsty Thursday post-work drinks, Fri-YAY night margs or bottomless brunch with the girls, then we’re buying Sweaty Betty jumpers with the phrases ‘gym to gin’ or ‘no pain, no champagne’ on or sending our friends alcohol-related cards, wishing them a ‘gin-tastic day’.
Alcohol is so ubiquitous – jokes about our drinking habits are even on the mugs and tea towels in the homeware section of department stores – that it’s nearly impossible not to get swept up in the narrative that in order to have a ‘good time’, booze must be involved.
It’s no surprise then that a recent report revealed that British women rank among the highest global binge drinkers. The study, conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) across 33 countries, identified the UK as a frontrunner in female binge drinking, sharing the top spot with Denmark.
