A massively tense election for the West Midlands Mayor has ended with Labour’s Richard Parker winning the role in a dramatic upset. It was a close contest for both Mr Parker and incumbent mayor Andy Street, the Conservative candidate, with a full recount of the mayoral votes in Coventry being carried out at one point.

The election count dragged on into the night, with the official declaration that Mr Parker had won taking place at around 9pm earlier today, May 4. It’s a bleak defeat for Mr Street and the Tories but a huge victory for Labour, who enjoyed success across the country during this year’s local elections.

Another surprise of the night was the performance of independent Akhmed Yakoob, who made Gaza one of his key focuses and gained 42,923 votes in Birmingham alone.

It’s been a momentous night for politics in the West Midlands - here’s a look at the results for mayor by each of the seven areas.
  1. Birmingham
  2. Coventry
  3. Dudley
  4. Sandwell
  5. Solihull
  6. Walsall
  7. Wolverhampton
