Thousands of opposition protesters will march on Pakistan’s capital to demand that Imran Khan step down as prime minister, claiming he is leading an “illegitimate” government amid anger over soaring inflation.

Members of an ultra-religious political party led by Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman, a powerful Islamist cleric, are marching from the southern port city of Karachi towards Islamabad, where they are due to arrive on Thursday, claiming they wish to topple Mr Khan’s government. They allege that Mr Khan and his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf swept to power through the support of the military and accuse the party of electoral fraud.

Troops were deployed on the streets of Islamabad and major roads sealed with shipping container barricades as the city awaited the arrival of thousands of protestors in what is seen as Prime Minister Imran Khan's biggest political test yet.

Schools were closed and streets quiet as Pakistan's capital braced for the culmination of a four-day Azadi march led by the Islamist JUI-F party.

The march by members of one of Pakistan's largest Islamist parties has been led by its chief, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, an orange-turbaned political veteran.

He claims Mr Khan came to power 15 months ago in a fraudulent election backed by the powerful military and has since gone on to ruin the economy.

The march is also being seen as a test of the strength for opposition parties who have been fractured and cowed by the arrest and detention of their leaders in anti-corruption investigations. The country's largest opposition parties, the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have lent support to the march, but their leadership has been absent from rallies along the way.

“The government will have to hand over power back to the people," Maulana Rehman told supporters on Wednesday evening. "They have destroyed the economy. When such devastation occurs, the country's geography is forever changed."

The march was due to arrive in Islamabad late on Thursday. Under terms of an agreement with the government, marchers will be restricted to a site on the outskirts of the city, and unable to approach the city's “red zone” which houses government ministries and institutions. Government officials have said the march will be allowed to pass peacefully if it keeps to the deal.

Mr Khan himself used similar displays to undermine the previous government as he campaigned against rampant corruption.

While the JUI-F has little electoral clout, its grassroots organisation and network of madrassahs is seen as a potent tool to mobilise street power.

Maulana Rehman has flipped between successive governments for decades and was once a hardline Islamist and anti-American firebrand, calling for the implementation of Shariah law and backing the Afghan Taliban. More recently he has criticised the exoneration of Asia Bibi, a Christian farmhand freed after spending years on death row after a false blasphemy accusation.

Michael Kugelman, deputy director of the Asia Program at the Washington-based Wilson Centre, said the idea of Maulana Rehman uniting the opposition “beggars belief”.

“Fazlur Rehman, with his incendiary talk and unsavory views, isn't exactly a uniter or a natural born leader of a mass movement. PML/PPP support will be tenuous at best.”

He went on: “The Azadi March appears rather opportunistic and short-lived: A political figure's desire to showcase the strength of his constituents and attract some attention before eventually calling it a day.”

The JUI-F’s Azadi March is headed to its final destination.

Party workers and supporters departed from Karachi, joined the march from all the cities they stopped in and will reach Islamabad today (Thursday) after five days. The march, which has the support of main opposition parties such as the PPP, PML-N, and ANP, aims to topple the PTI government.

The marchers reached Gujjar Khan early Thursday morning. They left for Islamabad at 5pm.

According to the law enforces, more than 25,000 people are travelling with the JUI-F. His container is leading the march and others are following behind in their vehicles.

An announcement was made from the container that instructed the marchers to not misbehave with women journalists at the march.

JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who is leading the protest, told his followers to follow him. “We have to stick together.”

He remarked that the march is both a rally and a sit-in. “We are peaceful people and we want to achieve our purpose peacefully,” he added.

On the Rahim Yar Khan train accident, he expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. More than 70 people were killed after a train caught fire early Thursday morning. “We demand that the accident should be investigated,” he said.

Rally controversy

The march found itself embroiled in controversy after the PML-N leaders claimed that the demonstration for it has been postponed till Friday. The statement was issued by Ahsan Iqbal, who is a member of the Rahbar Committee. His claims were reiterated by Marriyum Aurangzeb and Uzma Bukhari.

Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, who is affiliated with JUI-F, in a press conference said that the rally will not be postponed at any cost. “All our people have started moving towards Islamabad. We don’t know how we will be able to accommodate them for another day in Islamabad,” he remarked.

JUI-F has said that all its rallies will reach Islamabad on Thursday.

Rallies from across the country will enter Islamabad by tonight. The marchers will stay the night in the federal capital.

Fazl will address the march participants after offering Friday prayers on November 1.

Rallies leave for Islamabad

An ANP rally, comprising Asfandyar Wali Khan and Mian Ifthikhar Hussain, left Peshawar at 12pm. The rally will join marchers in Islamabad.

JUI-F leaders Akram Khan Durrani, Maulana Ataur Rehman, Maulana Asad Mahmood left Peshawar at 2pm. They have been joined by PPP leaders and workers. PML-N workers, on the other hand, left via the Peshawar Motorway Interchange at 1pm.

Supporters from Malakand and Hazara divisions are on their way too.

Day 4 highlights

The protesters departed from Lahore on Wednesday afternoon after gathering at Minar-e-Pakistan.

The Azadi March caravans reached Gujranwala at 11:45pm. Gujranwala is 60 kilometres away from Lahore and the protesters completed their journey in 12 hours. The protesters had passed through Jhelum, Ghagar Mandi, Lalamusa and Kharian.

The JUI-F chief briefly addressed his supporters at Gujranwala’s Chanda Qila. All the political parties are on the same page, they agree that people’s mandate was taken away from them during the July 25 General Election, he said. “Today, we have set out for the safety and integrity of Pakistan,” Fazl said. “The people of Pakistan have to fight this battle.”

The Azadi March participants were welcomed by PPP’s Qamar Zaman Kaira in Lalamusa. During his stay, Fazl met representatives of different political parties.

PML-N and JUI-F had organised a grand welcome for the marchers in Jhelum. They chanted slogans to boost the morale of the protesters and showered them with rose petals upon their arrival.
