INDIA: ORIGINATION OF CHESS/CHATURANGA ('four arms' of the Hindu army)



| “The game of chess found its way from India to Europe through the Arabs, perhaps at the time of the Crusaders.
It is first mentioned by the Sanskrit novelist
Bana, about A.D. 625: Its Sanskrit name is Chaturanga, the 'four arms' of the Hindu army. In Persian this becomes shantranj.
Many of its terms, such as 'checkmate' (shah mat, the king is dead),

and 'rook' (rukh) are of Persian origin." |
